Big Sigh…*

by Everyday Mommy on July 29, 2009

…of relief.  I’ve been reading and reading and reading over curriculum and which direction to take for this second grade year.  We’ve sort of felt our way along up until now, but I wanted to become more focused and more purposeful with this school year.  I’m pleased to say that I’ve chosen the Charlotte Mason method, with the help of Simply Charlotte Mason.  This website has been one of the most helpful, and quite frankly, easiest resources to use.  Curriculum choices can be overwhelming, but this website has been a real boon for me.  I like the gentle feel of the Charlotte Mason method and I think it will be a good fit for our gentle, tender hearted little boy.  It is also a more intimate teaching method for parent and child and involves the whole family in the learning adventure.  The fact that I can obtain many of the books at our library is also a plus.

Any Charlotte Mason fans out there?  I welcome your thoughts.

I’m homeschooling for the first time this year (2nd and K), and am using a curriculum based on her methods called My Father’s World. Obviously I have nothing else to compare it to but it seems like a pretty laid back course of study, leaving lots of time to be a family and learn from life. I have no clue what I’m doing but their schedule makes me feel not so overwhelmed. We’re actually excited to start!

I had to do a little digging on the SCM website, but I can now say with authority that we do use the Charlotte Mason Method. I use Sonlight as our core curriculum. I love the methods chart on the SCM website. We are heading into our 6th year of homeschooling and I have seen a lot of methods, ideologies and curricula. I can honestly say that I have seen very few children educated under any other style that love learning the way my children do.

I used “Well Trained Mind” until high school and loved it, but I always liked Charlotte Mason and know of families that used it very successfully and loved it.

Today I’m taking my youngest to college orientation. Our home school journey had ended. Sad, but glad, too.

I love anything that smacks of classical education. I know her method isn’t EXACTLY classical– but there are many similarities. I always used Sonlight back when we homeschooled.

This year, we are sending the kids to a Christian classical school this year and we are more than excited!

You know I’m a Dabba Method homeschooler: a dabba this and a dabba that, trying to tailor the schooling to the student while maintaining our commitment to a lifestyle of learning as a family. I learned how to teach from Miss Mason’s writings, and I’ve used Simply Charlotte Mason for kind of scoping and sequencing things for the younger kids in our tribe. I really think you’ll love it.

And I love you.

So there.

I’ve been homeschooling CM style for a couple of years and I love it! Besides acknowledging the Lord in all things, what I love about the CM approach above others is the emphasis on habit training and life skills.

Simply Charlotte Mason is a great resource, so is Ambleside Online (they actually have all of Charlotte Mason’s books online including a modern translation.) We implemented the Scripture memory system from SCM when I first read about it and I find that it works really well!

We’ve homeschooled for going on 6 years this year. My eldest is going into 7th grade, but I have one headed into 2nd and one into Kindergarten. We too, have decided to use Charlotte Mason’s method this year. I am both excited and nervous about such a HUGE departure from more structured learning, but I am sure that we will benefit from some good habit training. Looking forward to following your journeys this year. :)
