Where Were You?

911-Flag

I was 7 months pregnant with our son and had stayed home from work with a mild flu bug. I was watching the last few minutes of the morning news when they broke in to say that a plane had crashed into one of the World Trade Center towers.

Where were you?

I had been married just over a month. I turned on the morning news to watch the traffic report as I got ready for work, and turned on the television just in time to see footage of a plane crashing into one of the towers. I honestly thought I was on the wrong channel, and was watching a movie…so I turned it, only to discover that the exact same footage was being played on every channel.

I didn’t really know what else to do, so I went into work. I worked as a customer service rep at Grace to You. :) Our ONLY call that day was from a listener wanting to make sure that John MacArthur was safe, and wasn’t travelling that day. (I in the midst of the awfulness of that day, I thought that was extremely sweet!)

It was early a.m. in California – I was in bed nursing my 3-month-old son, and Jeff was getting ready for work. We watched it all unfold on FOX news. We went from one stunningly awful moment to the next, and I remember the sense of shock and horror we all felt that day and in the days following.

I believe those days were among the finest examples of patriotism and love of country that I’ve seen in my lifetime, and that our President rose to new heights of leadership.

I was in bed when the initial plane struck. Around the time I had to get up for school. It was weird, when I woke up for some reason I knew there was something wrong. Got up and went to my mom’s room and she was laying in bed watching the news. At school that day half of my classes were spent just watching the news.

I was getting ready to go to Ladies Bible Study at church. I had the news on that morning as usual and was talking to a friend on the phone. I looked up at the tv and saw a building was on fire. I told my friend to turn on the news…as we were talking and trying to figure out what was going on…I watched in horror the second plane hit the building. I said “Oh my God, that plane hit the World Trade Center.” It was totally unbelievable. We didn’t know quite what to do and decided to go on to church. When we arrived, those who were there were gathered around the tv. Some crying, some praying, all in utter amazement. We all gathered in a circle and prayed that God would comfort and give wisdom to those in the midst of this horrible event.

I was stationed overseas in the Navy. I had only been in for about a year. I was taking a test when all of a sudden people start running down the hall saying a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center and there are reports that another one is headed to the White House. At that moment everyone stopped what they were doing and in sat in shock as we watched the news. The next few weeks were crazy you could not enter one building on base without showing proper ID, not even to eat dinner. We were on lock down we could not even go home for the first couple of days, no one was leaving the base and no one was coming on. It’s a time in my life I will never forget.

I was at work near Albany, NY and two co-workers heard something on the radio, then dug out a TV in time to see the second plane hit. I was working with a couple of people who had friends/family working in or near that building. A very scary time…but I believe it could happen again (or something like it) and yet we’ve been lulled into thinking that we’re safe.

I was on my way to a Ladies’ Bible Study and heard the initial report on the Christian radio station, but the impression of that report was that the plane was a small plane, as in a terrible accident, not an attack. Only after the news reported a second plane did the intensity of the situation begin to sink in. All throughout Bible study, cell phones and pagers were going off as the news filtered in.

I was desperate to get home. Just home. But once there, the agony of those people, the devastation to so many lives, the repeated footage on the news was overwhelming. Lots of tears and prayer that God’s mercy would be seen, felt and heard. A blank numbness and so many questions. So much grief.

I was at work, listening to the radio and doing routine paperwork, when the DJ broke in and they switched to the news. About an hour later, a co-worker brought in a portable tv and sat with me watching the news for the rest of the day.

Not much work got done that day…

7:30AM, West Coast. My husband’s clock radio went off, barely audible to me, just enough to get the feeling that something horrible was happening. We quickly turned on the TV in our bedroom and then our jaws dropped as we watched the 2nd airplane fly into the 2nd building. We were in shock. I think I watched the TV coverage all that day. And then the next as well. I will never forget that day.

I was safely at home listening to a sports/talk program on a Montgomery, AL radio station when the guys announced that a plane had hit one of the twin towers. I turned on the TV to follow the story. As soon as the second tower was struck I knew we were under attack by some unknown enemy. That’s when panic set in. I knew that our older daughter was in Chicago for a business meeting with the company she worked for, Discover Card. I knew Discover Card had been started by Sears. I feared that the meeting might be taking place in the Sears Tower, and that it could be on the target list. Like so many others, we found it impossible to get through to her by phone, so we sat in a state of fear and dread as we watched the rest of the morning’s events unfold on TV.

As it turned out the meeting wasn’t in the Sears Tower which wasn’t a target after all. But it was hours before she was able to contact her husband in Georgia and he was able to get through to us to let us know she was safe, but stranded in Chicago because all flights had been grounded. She rented a car and drove home, but the direction of her life changed that day. She decided it was more important to be alive and with her family than to be flying all around the country on business trips, so she resigned a very lucrative position and started her own small business (http://www.extremecabinetmakeover.com/) that she operates from home. Remembering 9/11 still sends shivers up my spine.
