Itsy Bitsy

For some family fun, here’s an easy and inexpensive project to make creepy spiders.  When you’re done, follow up with some study of arachnids and learn what purpose spiders serve in nature.

Spider-1

You’ll need some pipe cleaners (I refuse to be politically correct and call them chenille stems), some pom poms and craft glue.

Spider-2

Take 2 pipe cleaners, any color you prefer (thank you to hand-model Rich for helping with this project).

Spider-3

Line them up side by side and bend them in half so that they’re relatively equal in length.

Spider-4

Snip in half at the fold using heavy shears or wire cutters.

Spider-5

You’ll now have four relatively equal length pipe cleaners.

Spider-6

Holding them in the middle, twist until the four pipe cleaners hold together.

Spider-7

They’ll look like this.

Spider-8

Now gently bend the pipe cleaners and fan them out a bit to form the legs of the spider.

Spider-9

Till it looks like this.

Spider-11

Now place a dab of glue at the center of the pipe cleaner legs.  You don’t need much.

Spider-12

Carefully place a pom pom on the dab of glue and press gently.

Spider-13

Make sure the pom pom adheres to the glue.

Spider-16

Set your collection of spiders aside to allow the glue to dry.

Spider-17

You can make a mobile to display your spiders…

Spider-18

…or, to frighten your family & friends.

Cute, cute, cute! :)

The hardest part: that whole “you don’t need much” thing with the glue. (Why use a dab when two tablespoons is so much more fun?)

Now that’s fun! Claire would get such a kick out of that little craft. Wait a sec…yep…feels like a trip to Michael’s comin’ on.

Yep…that’s pretty cute. Love the look of sheer delight on Johnny’s face in the photo where he’s looking at the finished mobile. :)

Love that craft! And I had no idea “pipe cleaner” wasn’t PC. But it figures. *geesh*

Pipe cleaners…they are everywhere in our house right now! Thankfully not as spiders! :-) I would probably forget they are fake and start screaming as soon as I saw it! :-)

Me, too Celia :)

We made these ALL weekend. My four Littles, plus one of my nephews kept busy making spiders to last a lifetime. What a great craft, our house is sufficiently decked with Halloween arachnids! Thank you, Kristin
