How to Soothe a Teething Baby

teething-baby2It can be frustrating soothing a teething baby especially if you have already exhausted all your options. Some parents’ think that they have done and tried everything, but there is hope out there.

Soothing a teething baby can be a difficult task for parents, but there are some effective tips. If you are one of the many parents who are struggling with this problem, then the information below will definitely help you.

Gums Numbing

One of the most effective ways is allowing the gums of your baby to feel numb for a while. The reason behind this is because the numbness of the gum will let your baby not feel any pain for a while. Since babies love chewing when they are teething, you can let her chew a clean cloth that is chilled. You may also use a teething ring and chill it in the fridge for a while, but make sure that it is not frozen because the coldness can cause more pain. You can also use gels for numbing. Of course just make sure to apply the right amount and avoid putting on too much as this will make your baby more annoyed.

Massaging the Gums

You can try to help your baby by massaging the gums with a clean finger. By massaging them firmly you will create a soothing effect for your baby. You can do this once in a while and just make sure not overdo it, and don’t get bitten!

Taking Medicines

OK, sometimes when all other avenues have been tried, and your baby is crying constantly from pain and your own head is spinning, a small dose of acetaminophen or an ibuprofen may be in order. Of course always consult your baby’s doctor or pharmacist first before letting your baby take anything.

Yes patience IS a virtue! At least that’s what they tell us. A teething baby requires a lot of patience by the parent. If your baby is in pain and awake all night, chances are so are you. If you feel annoyed or irritated, your baby will surely feel it too, which will only make them feel more uncomfortable. Playing some nice soothing music for him and for you just might calm you both down. Providing your baby a loving and warm environment will help with the pain that he is currently feeling at the moment.

But you should always remember that this is an essential part of parenthood and while this period will not last forever, just remember all the other parents experiencing the same issue.

Travelling (surviving) on road trips with kids

Most families prefer travelling with their children by car, mainly to avoid having problems with other people getting annoyed by the behavior of their kids. If you want to avoid the road trip from hell then some tips are in order. Travelling with children can be fun and difficult at times especially if you are not well prepared for a long ride. As you all know children can get a little bored when it comes to being confined in the car for a long period of time. They whine, cry, and even have fights with you and will in turn ruin your trip. Fortunately, there are things that you can do when taking small children on long journeys without them getting too bored. Below are some of the tips that you can do to ensure that they will enjoy their ride.

Packing Drinks and Food

Children can get hungry and thirsty often and they need to have something to eat or drink NOW. Instead of stopping at the convenience store on your way, you can pack drinks and food that you and your children can eat while on the road. Packing is more ideal than purchasing on the road since it tends to be more expensive.

Bring Toys and Stuff

You can let your children bring their most precious toys with them, while some may prefer bringing their favorite stuffed toy or their blanket. These things can help them be entertained or stay asleep while you are still on the road. Just make sure though you have enough room for all their toys. Lastly, make sure that these toys are within your reach so you can easily hand them over.

Portable Player

Entertain your children by letting them watch their favorite shows or movies through your portable player. You can also bring along the CDs, for them to be able to listen and sing. These things will surely keep them entertained – at least for a while.

Another thing that you can do is to prepare some surprises for them, which you know they will like. You can prepare a small bag where you can store a surprise book, toy, or a treat for them. Choose a surprise that they will surely love to have and they can use easily while you are still on the road.

Stop Overs

If the ride is too long, you can go to stop overs to have a bit of a rest and stretch. You can try stopping over at a nice park or a roadhouse. Have a map with you showing places where you can stop. You can also throw away some trash at the same time, and check on the car.

For them to be able to fully enjoy the long ride, you need to make sure that the kids are all comfortably dressed. You can let them wear sweat pants or their favorite clothing, for as long as they feel comfortable in it. You may even want to start travelling early morning when your children will most probably asleep at that time.

Essential Oil Diffusers

As it was my father’s birthday on the weekend (happy birthday Dad) we celebrated the occasion at my sister’s house. My sister is a wonderful cook so we were expecting some pleasant cooking aromas when we walked through the front door. However, upon arriving we smelt something different. While it wasn’t her usual cooking prowess on display it did come from an essential oil diffuser she had running in the kitchen area. The smell was powerful, yet light and relaxing.

So I decided to take the plunge and see what all the hype was about for myself, and found that these diffusers have many wonderful health uses. Basically all you do is add a few drops of an essential oil and water into a diffuser and it will disperse in the air you breathe as vapor.

Firstly, what are essential oils? They are just highly concentrated plant extracts, yet they possess strong medicinal and cosmetic qualities. Depending on what benefit you are hoping to achieve, choosing the right essential oil is important. Here is a quick list of some anticipated health benefits you may get from using essential oils:

relieving colds; improving your skin; treating allergies and asthma; easing headaches; combating arthritis and rheumatism, and they can even be used for treating anxiety and depression. The top 5 essential oils are Lavender, Tea tree oil, Peppermint oil, Eucalyptus oil and Helichrysum oil. Each essential oil comes with many different health benefits that can be diffused regularly.

Essential oils function best when they aren’t heated, as high temperatures can ruin some of the beneficial aspects of the oil. Cold air diffusers tend to be the best type and they can be reasonably priced.

So what is the best type of oil diffuser? Some of the best essential oil diffusers come in many different shapes but the most common types are generally ultrasonic and nebulizing diffusers.

Ultrasonic diffusers use electrical frequencies to create vibrations that carry to the top where the oils are floating. The vibrations evaporate the oil and diffuse them into the air.

Nebulizing diffusers atomize the essential oil into very fine droplets which are then sent into the atmosphere by using a cold air pump or jet-style atomizer.

So I thought I would bite the bullet and ended up buying the Smiley Daisy Ultrasonic Diffuser.

I use it a lot now, especially when I’m working in my study. I have tried mixing Lavender and Roman Chamomile together to get a blend for creating a relaxing mood while I work. Maybe it will even inspire me to write more! Or maybe there is an essential oil that encourages children to clean their rooms. Now that would be some powerful essential oil.

STDs Leading Cause of Infertility in Women

STDs or sexually transmitted diseases are conditions in the body where the infection rapidly spreads from one person to another in different ways. There are a lot of complications that sexually transmitted diseases have especially for women, and one of this is infertility. According to a recent report STD’s are the leading cause of infertility in women and this is because women who have STDs also develop PID or the pelvic inflammatory disease.

About Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

PID or the pelvic inflammatory disease is caused by the infection wherein the body starts overreacting to it. The woman’s immune system will then try to fight the bacteria invading the body, which in return will cause local scarring and inflammation. Most of the time the body’s response to this invasion becomes successful, but the downside is that it has the ability to damage certain organs in the body. This disease can scar the pelvic cavity, fallopian tubes, and the uterus, and is also one of the reasons why women experience chronic pain in the pelvic area. When there are scars in these areas, the chances of infertility increase.

STD and Infertility

As mentioned, PID which is associated with STD, the number one cause of infertility. One or even both the fallopian tubes can occlude during the process and this can even be a worse for women who are older and smoke. Women known to be using IUDs are also prone to deterioration in their fallopian tubes that leads to infertility. The consequences are that the sperm has difficulty reaching the egg. But when the sperm finally get through the egg, the egg on the other hand might not be able to reach the uterus.

Symptoms to Watch Out For

One of the most common pains that you should watch out for if you already have a sexually transmitted disease is the pain in your pelvis and the lower part of your abdomen. Periods that are irregular are also a sign of pelvic inflammatory disease caused by STD. Pain while urinating and while having sex are also known symptoms, while lower back pain can also be included though this can also be a symptom of other underlying causes. Discharge in the vagina that is excessive and has an odor that is foul is a clear sign of an infection. Some of the general signs of an infection are vomiting, diarrhea, exhaustion and fever. If these symptoms are present, then it is strongly advisable to visit your doctor to check your condition. This might help save you from infertility.

STD Infection Treatment

Gonorrhea and chlamydia are two of the most known type of sexually transmitted diseases, and are the main causes why women develop pelvic inflammatory disease. Doctors’ tend to advise their patients to take antibiotics for the infection. There are some cases where an abscess has already ruptured, or on the brink of rupturing. This will require immediate surgery to avoid causing too much infection.

But remember the main thing you can do to prevent STDs is to avoid unprotected sexual intercourse.

A hard lesson in life is one well earned

Having children who haven’t quite reached the teenage years yet, I am usually somewhat apprehensive when my friends complain and moan about their own children who have indeed reached this milestone. For instance, one friend emailed me to say that her 18 year old son who is studying Accounting at College insisted it wasn’t for him and decided that he now wanted to be a police officer. They of course agreed he should check out this new vocation but not leave College yet, and perhaps attend an information session. So when the day finally arrived, their son forgot to go and didn’t think anything more of it. “He has no understanding of the real world..” my friend complained. He is now talking about joining the army…..

My niece did a 4 year drama degree at College (with honours) and now can’t get a job except working at the local hardware store. She’s left home, renting and marrying a guy who makes pizzas for a living. He however is trying to better himself and decided to do a week’s massage course. I guess a massager makes more money than a pizza maker. They have no money, and have no saving goals for their future. But they do have a new car given to them from my sister and brother-in-law. My sister pays for all the insurance and registration. They buy her new clothes when she needs them too. My niece is also planning on buying the new iPhone 6 which cost about $1000 despite her iphone5 still working perfectly well.

I guess what I am trying to say here is that this new generation can’t seem to see much past the next day. I know there are a lot of great kids out there working hard, and this is just a couple of isolated incidents but I am hearing more about this Gen Y group in the media who are being brought up thinking they are special with inflated egos. I also heard a story recently that a teacher at a school graduation decided to be honest and explain to the kids at the ceremony that despite what they have been told by their parents, friends and family they are NOT special, and making their way in the world will be difficult.

Another friend of mine who works in the recruitment industry has said that Gen Y are a nightmare in the workplace – they never seem to do what you want, always have one foot out the door, are scheming and ambitious, never wanting to start at the bottom of the ladder. Some have even been known to use their cell phones during an interview.

We all want the best for our children and hope they end up making the right decisions in life, but it’s a hell of a long journey for us parents to know if we and they are doing the right thing or not. Me, I take one day at a time. I have no hesitation in telling my children they have done something wrong, but I also think they should be allowed to learn from their mistakes. To be honest I’m still learning as they grow older. My friend who has the 18 year old has said it can sometimes take several mistakes for her son to realize that the decision he chose was not the correct one – like parking illegally at college. Yes, despite getting several parking tickets I think he finally learnt his lesson after receiving the 6th one. An expensive lesson but one he hopes to not make again.

Has anyone else got similar stories? I’m happy to hear of them!

Ways to Entertain Your Kids during the School Holidays

School holidays are a great time for some parent-child bonding time. But kids easily get bored, and it is ideal for you to give them something to do to help them be entertained. There are a lot of ways to entertain your kids during the school holidays when they are at home.

Building a Fort

One of the best activities that will surely keep your kids well entertained is by letting them build their own fort. If you are lucky enough to have a decent size backyard, then let your kids do it there or inside the house if it’s during winter. You can begin by setting up a safe area where they can start to build the fort for themselves. You can help them by using a bed sheet to hang over a tree maybe, and make sure to create an opening where they can enter. Kids usually prefer crawling so a small opening will definitely do.

Bake or Cooking

cookingAnother good thing is to let them cook with you. You can bake some very tempting treats together, which they don’t usually get to enjoy when they are busy with school. This is actually a good way to bond with your kids because they will learn how to prepare the food that they will eat themselves. But just make sure they don’t cut themselves with sharp kitchen utensils. If they are very young letting them mix the bowl and give them tasks that are safe for them is sufficient.

Board Games

There are a lot of board games today and there are also the traditional ones, such as chess and cards. This is a good way to keep their brains active while not in school. You can also give them puzzles as most kids love working things out.

Other Languages

You can also entertain them by teaching them different languages. Kids soak up a lot of knowledge when they are young so it is a good time to try different languages, especially if you are going overseas and it will motivate them to learn. However, don’t put too much pressure of them when you start teaching them because your goal here is to entertain them while they are learning.

Creating Artwork

craftingThe type of artwork that you will create will depend on the current season. If it’s the Christmas season, you can let them design decorations. Give them prizes once they get to finish, to encourage them to finish their work.

Another thing that you can do with your kids is to let them give you a hand in the garden. If you don’t have a garden yet, you can start planting something in your backyard and let your kids pick the flowers or the plants that they would like to see there. You can teach them the right ways of planting and how they can take good care of them, so they can have the pleasure knowing they did the planting when the garden grows.

The Dangers of Not Vaccinating Your Child

When it comes to the decision of whether or not to vaccinate a child, opinion tends to be divided. A recent support by the CDC suggests that a significant number of parents are choosing not to vaccinate toddlers, a choice which is linked to a resurgence of childhood illnesses such as measles and whooping cough. It isn’t only the children who are at risk, however; so, too, are vulnerable members of the population such as the elderly, infants and toddlers, and those who are ill.

Missing Vaccination Targets

Key findings from the CDC’s 2013 report on immunization are as follows:

  • The target of 90% vaccination cover was achieved for the MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) virus, as well as the polio, chickenpox and Hepatitis B vaccines. However, this target was not met for many other vaccines, including those against pneumonia, meningitis, Hepatitis A, septicemia and the rota virus.
  • In 17 states, less than 90% of children receive the MMR virus.
  • Lower vaccination rates occur in those living below the poverty rate.

The US is currently facing a measles comeback; from January, 2014 to August, 2014, some 593 cases of measles were reported; whooping cough and mumps are also on the rise. Although poverty is a factor in viral infections, the CDC warns that pockets of non-vaccination can occur in any area.

Importance of Herd Immunity

The CDC aims to achieve ‘herd immunity’: the situation in which enough members of the population are immunized, thereby protecting the population at large from acquiring illnesses. Immunization does not just protect those who are unvaccinated by choice; it also helps those who are more naturally prone to infection, including babies, pregnant women, the elderly and the sickly. Although herd immunity has been achieved for the MMR and DTaP vaccines, unvaccinated people are often concentrated in specific communities, thereby increasing the chance of disease spreading.

Common Vaccination Myths

There are many misconceptions surrounding the subject of immunizations. These include:

  • The belief that childhood diseases are now extremely rare. The same disease-causing microbes exist, so we need to immunize our children against them.
  • The belief that vaccinations pose health risks. These are extremely rare and the benefits far outweigh the risks. For instance, a failure to vaccinate children would increase the number of whooping cough cases 71-fold.

Consequences of Not Vaccinating Your Child

Although children can make a full recover from disease such as measles and mumps, this is not always the case. In almost 10% of all measles cases, a severe ear infection develops and there is a 0.1% of pneumonia and seizures. Measles poses a risk to unborn babies. If pregnant women are exposed to the infection, possible outcomes include miscarriage, stillbirth and premature delivery. Mumps, meanwhile, can rarely cause male infertility, meningitis, deafness, etc.

The consequences extend beyond health; vaccination mandates exist in all states, and many day care facilities and school clubs will expect your child to be vaccinated. Your child may also have to face travel restrictions, or a doctor might refuse to treat them, if the absence of immunization.

Positive parenting tips

There are numerous things that parents can do to assist their children learn during each stage of growth and development. These are all positive tips to promote health, safety and positive parenting.

  • Always talk to your child. He or she will always find that your voice is calming.
  • Always answer when your baby makes sound. You can repeat those sounds and then add words. That way your child will learn to use language.

Tip 1

Build Your Child’s Self-Esteem

Self esteem starts developing when kids are still babies. They always see themselves through their parents’ eyes. Always watch the tone of your voice because that is what the child watches. Your body language and all other expressions play a great role. The development of a child’s self esteem is influenced by the words and actions of the parents.

Make it a practice to praise accomplishments no matter small. This will make them feel real proud. Allow the kids to do their things independently in order to make them feel strong and capable. Avoid belittling or comparing your child unfavorably with others because the kid will feel worthless.

Always avoid using words as weapons or loaded statements. Avoid comments such as “what a stupid thing to do?”. Such words will have the same effect as physical blows.

Your choice of words is very important. Always make sure you are compassionate. Let your kids realize that every person makes a mistake in life. Express your love to the kids even after they have made mistakes.

Tip 2

Catch your kids doing something right

It is very effective to catch your kids doing the right things. This is a very effective approach. “You wash your clothes without being asked- that is terrific!” Such statements will do a lot in encouraging good behavior if they are repeated on the long term.

On a daily basis, try to find something for which to praise your child. In addition to that be very generous with rewards. This can come in the form of hugs, love or compliments and they have been proved to be very effective. In the long run you see that you are growing the required behavior.

Tip 3

Be consistent and set limits with your discipline

Discipline is a necessary thing in every home. The main goal for discipline is to assist your kids in developing self-control and choosing acceptable behavior. This is especially important in testing the limits that you have set on your kids.

Your kids will easily understand your expectations if you set up house rules. That way they will also develop self-control. These are examples of house rules: no name-calling, no television till homework is completed; no hitting others in the house and no hurtful teasing is allowed. As a parent, you might want to put a system in place. A good example is giving a warning which is followed by loss of privileges. Be consistent in dispensing your discipline. You cannot discipline your kid one day and ignore their mistake the next day. Consistency always pays.

Tip 4

Make Time for Your Kids

It is often hard for parents and their kids to always meet for a family meal. Family members need to spend quality time together. This is what the kids would like more than anything else. It is advisable that you wake up 20 minutes earlier every day so that you have breakfast together with your kids. Alternatively, you can make an habit of having a walk every dinner. This is important because the children who do not get the attention that they deserve from their parents often tend to misbehave because that is the only way they will get noticed.

Parents should create a special night each week to be together and allow the child to decide how this time will be spent. In addition to that look for more ways to connect with your kids. For instance, you can put a note in your child’s lunchbox.

Do Postpartum Girdles really help?

You have to admit that the word ‘girdle’ springs to mind something for an elderly person, but having looked at some of these contraptions on the marketplace they are definitely something to consider. There is a lot of pressure on women these days to get their pre-baby body back after having a baby. The tabloids’ reactions to Kate Middleton’s bump hours after she gave birth, and Kim Kardashian hiding away after having North put added speculation that she was waiting until she had her old body back

Postpartum girdles, or belly wraps help to keep your abdominal muscles back in place after having a baby. You still need to exercise, but for the first 6-8 weeks after birth you won’t be feeling like too much exercise, so one of these girdles may give your body time to heal naturally and rest. You will notice a difference to your body.

They are especially useful for women who have had c-sections, and help reduce back pain, water retention and speed up the healing process. A girdle will also help you to achieve a better posture and provide support to those areas that had been through a lot of pressure and stretching. Some mothers may wear them for a few weeks, while others close to a year.

The elastic bands are designed to be “abdominal compression binders” which apply pressure to the abdominal area after delivery. They can take the pressure off your legs and back and actually help reduce that uncomfortable uterine swelling and bloating so many moms experience post-delivery. They are said to help with diastasis recti. Other claims include lessening post-partum bleeding, alleviating cramping, and allowing your uterus to its return to normal size and location quicker. Most come with adjustable Velcro closures that can help you get back into your pre-pregnancy shape. While it does sound uncomfortable, they come in a variety of lightweight, comfortable, and even organic materials. They can also be worn underneath your normal clothes so others wouldn’t know you are wearing one. One of these girdles can also make a woman feel not only healthy, but more confident about her appearance in this transitional time after childbirth. While we can’t promise that they will melt away the pounds (diet and exercise, anyone?), they will help “tighten and shrink your tummy post pregnancy.” While it’s impossible to know how much of an effect one of these girdles will have on getting your pre-baby body back it’s important to remember so many other factors including diet, exercise, breastfeeding, and genetics that play a role, too.

The postpartum girdles are available in larger retail stores, but also a number of online stores will stock them. They are relatively inexpensive and cost anywhere between $20-$100 depending on the make and model.

If you’re looking for a simpler, gentler style of support than the post-partum girdling, a band-style post-partum support belt may be just what the doctor (or stylist) ordered. Though the support offered by a post-partum support band is generally less than that of a full-coverage medical-grade girdle, these belts will definitely flatten your tummy some and still promote good posture while nursing.

Maternity Support Belts

maternity-support-beltIt is tough work carrying a baby inside a human body. This can cause a lot of straining and produce side effects in pregnant women.

As the baby grows it puts a lot of pressure on the bladder and sometimes causes varicose veins. In some cases it leads to chronic back pain. These are some of the reasons that make it necessary for some women to use support garments. These devices create extra support for pregnant women.

The most common support belt is called the maternity belt. This is one of the most essential products used during pregnancy. The support belt is very good for relieving lower back pain. A support belt can be a solution for stomach and pelvic support, lower back and leg pain. The belt is also suitable for wearing when doing exercises.

There are many types of maternity support belts. The simplest being the one made from elastic which can be adjusted to fit different sizes. These belts are mostly wound around the back and underneath the breasts. The compression is important in significantly reducing back pain. There is also a chance that it will increase blood flow to the pelvis. This creates a good environment for the bladder by relieving the pressure from it.

There are other types of maternity belts that provide more cover and support of the lower back. Others are just made up of a strap that supports the lower part of the stomach. Some of these support belts have straps that get more support from the shoulders. This provides extra support and the weight is redistributed all over the body making it comfortable carrying the extra weight of the growing baby.

Maternity belts can also help women in the post pregnancy period to recover quickly from natural birth or caesarean-section. There are many health benefits associated with it and in addition to that, it helps you get back to your pregnancy shape faster.

This is not just a belt to assist you in hiding your post baby body. The product has additional medical benefits and can hence they are used to shorten the time required for the uterus to return to its original size before pregnancy.

After any type of abdominal procedure such as the C-section, this support belt will increase your confidence to walk, sit and resume your daily activities. The belt provides back compression, relieves pain and helps muscles recover from pregnancy trauma after child birth.

The kind of reinforcement provided at the abdominal level is good in reducing any form of deformity and the formation of excess fatty skin. This happens through the provision of anatomic compression which is adjustable. This is the source of not only faster recovery but also re-shaping of your figure.
